DIY Home Improvement Or Call a Pro?

DIY home repair and remodeling is a trendy, inexpensive way to maintain and improve your home without enduring the overburdening costs that accompany professional service. Thousands of projects around the home require nothing more than tools, time, and the ability to use your hands to complete; no professional needed. Although every project is not a DIY endeavor, there are many that certainly fit this role wonderfully.

Pros Vs. Cons: DIY Home Remodeling

Professionals receive specialized schooling and training that makes them industry experts ready to tackle most any project around the home. They’re capable of quickly handling your projects and any problems that ensue during the remodel. Without an expert at your side, problems that arise during a remodeling project can cause a headache since you lack the expertise to repair them.

If you want to use solar powered products, it is easy to do this yourself with some of the DIY instructions. However, you may need to hire professionals to help structure your home in a way that is suitable for solar power setup.

Pros have the tools to complete various remodeling projects, whereas most homeowners have only a few screwdrivers, wrenches and commonly used tools in their toolbox. Some repairs require specialized tools and equipment. Without them, it is impossible to complete the work. Furthermore, some repairs are dangerous and should be left to the professionals. Jobs that involve the roof or electrical systems in the home, restoration and remediation, and other similar jobs, are too dangerous to attempt to handle yourself.

DIY repairs cost considerably less than hiring a professional in most cases. In fact, HomeAdvisor reports that labor accounts for approximately 50% of the total costs of a repair. This is an incredible amount of money that can be chopped off the costs of the repair/remodel when you opt to DIY. Tons of how-to guides, TV shows, internet videos, and other resources make it even easier to repair many problematic areas of the home or create an updated look that’s in tune with today’s style.

Common DIY Home Renovations & Repairs

Don’t pick up the phone to call a professional to resolve these common home renovations and repairs. They’re among the easiest to tackle during a DIY project and usually don’t require professional intervention to resolve.

Clogged Toilets

Although many people reach for drain cleaners to resolve clogged toilet concerns, professional advise against using them, as they rarely provide efficient results and contribute long-term damage to the plumbing system. Nonetheless, homeowners can cure a clogged toilet using an agitator, also called a plumber’s snake. This tool is sold at home improvement stores and is fairly easy to use. Many at-home natural solutions also exist for clogged toilets.

Interior Painting

A fresh coat of paint on the walls of your home is all that it takes to create a vibrant, lively space that enlightens the mood and updates the style. Throw on some old clothes, head to the home improvement store to buy a few paint brushes and rollers, and choose your favorite colors of paint. Let the fun begin.

Garbage Disposal

A jammed garbage disposal is a common problem that homeowners face, but it usually takes just a couple of minutes to repair. Turn off the power to the garbage disposal to prevent any unnecessary injuries, since there are tons of blades inside. The job is simple if it is a minor clog that’s causing trouble. Adjust the flywheel at the bottom of the disposal with an Allen wrench and you’re ready to dispose of all your scrap foods.

Final Thoughts

Homeowners can anticipate many problems during the course of home ownership. However, don’t let the thought of these problems bring you down, since repairing them without professional help may certainly be a realistic idea that saves you a tremendous amount of money and headache. If you have the tools, the time, and the project doesn’t put you or your health at-risk, why not give it a go? You might very well find that DIY home repair and renovation is something that you love.
