Thursday in many homes across America, families will be joining together to share a warm meal, spirited conversations and maybe some rivalries over their favorite football teams. It is a time to give thanks for the many blessings we have been given. And, oh the blessings we have been given that we sadly, often take for granted.
Not every family in America (or across the world) will have the luxury of having too much food on their tables or even a place to come home to this Thanksgiving. Not every person will be able to afford or even think about going shopping this weekend.
A friend posted this picture on Facebook earlier today. Yes it is meant to make you stop and think. Yes it is a little shocking. Most people probably scrolled on by it, or maybe stopped to look, shook their heads and then went on about their business.
Sometimes we don’t want to stop and really think about things like this. I believe we need to though. I believe Jesus wants us to remain humble, grateful and to do whatever is in our power to help others. One day you could be the one needing someone else’s help.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with giving gifts to those we love. There’s nothing wrong with decorating our homes and shopping for great bargains. However, I know for myself, there is really nothing I personally NEED this year. Sure, there are plenty of things I want, but if I did not receive a single gift this Christmas, I wouldn’t be lacking anything at all. How amazing that I can say that, how blessed I am beyond measure to not need anything significant this Christmas. It makes me desire even more to help others out this Christmas.
I just received this beautiful Love Came Down Tealight Trio, Table Runner & Tabletop Advent Devotional from Dayspring to review. As I was setting it out along with some other Christmas decorations, the little tea lights gave me a great reminder of how even just a little light can illuminate a dark room and make a big difference.
It doesn’t take much to help our fellow man. It doesn’t take much to shine a light in a world of darkness. It doesn’t take much to make a difference. It doesn’t take much to share the love of Jesus with others. With all that is going on in our world, even right in here our own country, state and our local communities, if we would all just give a little to others this year, just think of the impact we could make.
There are so many ways we can shine a light and help others this Christmas. Instead of doing a holiday gift exchange at your work or with your networking group, have everyone bring a toy to donate to Toys for Tots or bring food to help stock a local food pantry. One of my friends’ little boys has been making & selling homemade jam for months to save up money to buy a well for a community through World Vision. No matter how young or old you are you can make a difference! Whether it’s filling shoe boxes Operation Christmas Child or stockings for the Salvation Army or adopting a child or family through Angel Tree Ministries or sponsoring a child through World Vision or supporting a struggling family in your community or church, volunteering at homeless shelters or collecting and sending items to victims of Hurricane Sandy or the wildfires out West or visiting and giving small gifts to elderly people in nursing homes, there are people in the US and across the world who need our help.
This is what being thankful is all about. This is what Christmas is truly about: shining a light for Jesus & sharing His pure love and the abundant hope that is only found in Him with whatever we have, wherever we are with whomever we can. Let us not forget to help those in need as we celebrate with our own loved ones over the next few weeks.
